Local 1004 History

Local 1004 was formed in Salt Lake City in 1976.  In 1977, they were successful in obtaining a collective bargaining resolution under Mayor Ted Wilson. Prior to AFSCME, Salt Lake City employees worked without a contract and did not have the ability to negotiate their wages, benefits and working conditions.
Today, the Memorandum of Understanding includes benefits that are unique to Salt Lake City - and have been for over 35 years
We are the largest public employee union in the AFL-CIO with 1.6 million members nationally and the only public employee union in Utah.
We are strong, local, and growing. We are AFSCME 1004.
